This message is a scam warning that Anne has received
“I’ve just had an answerphone message from my bank, referring to something I’d asked them to do, telling me they need to speak to me before they can progress the matter.  They gave a very strange number to call them back on – 38845 745 6123.  As far as I know there is no UK number in this numbering range, so my suspicions were aroused.  On calling the number, I was given a Change of Number message and asked to call 0843 1167780 instead.  This number puts you into a queue, where you are then expected to wait, and wait.

This is now looking distinctly dodgy, so I called my bank through normal channels, an was told that this is the latest scam.  It’s not clear if they are just charging you while you wait in the queue, or that they will eventually answer, and then try to elicit personal details, or both.

I called BT to report the matter, and they confirmed that it is a scam, and left a note on my BT account to cancel any charges arising from it.  They also advised me to google the 0843 number, where I would see several reports of similar activity.

So, if you are ever asked to call this number – 0843 1167780 – google it first to check it out.  In fact, if you are ever asked to call a different number to the one you expected, google it first.  And tell BT on 150.

I hope you are all well, and don’t get caught!”

The police have asked us to make all residents aware that there were 3 instances last week  in the Norton area where householders have received a phone call from criminals claiming to be the Police saying that their Credit Card have been used by fraudsters. They are to put all Credit cards into an envelope and a courier would come and collect them. One lady was still on the phone to the bogus police when a person visited, she gave them her credit card and you know the rest!

Whilst it may seem unlikely that people can fall for this, if the story is plausible then it can, and does, happen. It’s better to be warned than harmed.
